History

HistoryHistory

The development of Satya Budhi Temple (Hiap Thian Kiong / Xie Tian Gong) complex began with the arrival and activities of the Chinese community in Bandung. The establishment of this Satya Budhi Temple was led by Tan Hay Hap, the second leader of the Chinese community in Bandung.

Based on the first inscription found within the temple, it's known that Satya Budhi Temple was first inaugurated in 1885 (光绪十一年乙酉) under the name Sheng Di Miao. This name later changed to Hiap Thian Kiong, which is called Xie Tian Gong in Mandarin.

However, with the implementation of Presidential Decree No. 14 of 1967, which restricted Chinese culture and the use of Chinese-related names, the name Hiap Thian Kiong / Xie Tian Gong was changed to Satya Budhi Temple.

The development of Satya Budhi Temple complex continued. In 1971, a new building named Samudra Bhakti Temple was inaugurated, and eight years later, in 1979, Buddha Gaya Temple was established.

Monday, 12, May 2025

Vesak 2569B.E./2025 event at Buddha Gaya Temple and Samudra Bhakti Temple was held with great solemnity and joy, attended by over 1000 devotees. This celebration commemorates three great events in the life of the Great Teacher Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and parinibbana. The series of activities included devotional services, meditation, Dharma talks, and the enactment of Sān Bù Yī Bài (Three Steps, One Bow), where devotees walk three steps and prostrate once as a form of reverence and mental training. The success of this event was undoubtedly due to the support and cooperation of all committee divisions from the Angkatan Muda Vihara Buddha Gaya (AMVBG), such as Devotional Service, Consumption, Usher, Market Stand, Equipment, and Footwear Storage.
